New Zealand Contribute $1 Million to Haiti Aid Efforts

Although New Zealand may be far from the horrifying realities of Haiti, it is doing it’s best to support the suffering
Murry McCully, NZ’s Foreign Aid Minister has just announced that a NZ $1 million will be immediately contributed to the suffering Haiti. As well as the $1 million, other measures are also being put in place to assist the ravaged country. McCully was reported saying “As the enormity of this disaster emerges, the international community is rapidly mobilising to assist the people of Haiti,"
The disaster has in turn meant that the visit planned by US Secretary of State, Hilliary Clinton, has had to be postponed, as the problems in Haiti are obviously much higher on the list of commitments by the US. New Zealand has backed this idea and McCully was reported saying that “Saving lives and assisting survivors are obviously the immediate priorities. New Zealand's contribution will therefore be channelled through international relief agencies, such as the International Red Cross and various United Nations agencies, who are already in Haiti and have the ability to respond effectively to a such a disaster.”
Relief efforts by outside countries, including that of NZ are proving very difficult as Haiti’s national airport is closed due to damage by the 7.0 earth quake that has absolutely demolished the already impoverished country.
The disaster has also proven more close to home than first expected as two NZ families have been confirmed alive, however two remain trapped in the rubble of the Karibe Hotel.
In closing, McCully said "We are continuing to work with our consular partners (US, Canada, Australia, France, UK) and international organisations (UN, Red Cross) on the ground in Haiti to see what immediate assistance they can provide.”
