Australia and New Zealand Defence Force’s are currently undergoing talks to unite in order to ease the growing crisis in the Pacific
Australia and New Zealand defence forces are uniting to try and solve the escalating problems in the Pacific. Described as the “traditional ANZAC tradition,” Defence Minister Wayne Mapp has had intense discussions with the Australian Defence Minister, Joel Fitzgibbon regarding a possible mergence of the two defence militaries.
Although this is still very much in progress, early assumptions are emerging to suggest that there will be greater use of each other’s equipments, particularly that of transportation devices and logistics support. Canberra was reported saying that such relations are necessary and will continue to “deepen and evolve.”
However, even with such co-operation, the problem in the Pacific can not be easily resolved and problems such as “ Weak governance, crime and social challenges will continue to jeopardise economic development and community resilience, against a background of climate change ... and more frequent natural disasters."
Both New Zealand and Australia agree that the best means of co-operation should be constantly in the direction of “preventative diplomacy.”
The one issue point however concerns the imbalance of military spending and upgrades, as Australia’s budget in this area is substantially larger then that of New Zealand’s, however this issue has not been openly discussed.
This proves yet another bilateral relation in a ever-globalising world, and illustrates that the ANZAC spirit is by no means dead.
