After a deal struck up between the National Government and Iwi, two iwi members are off to Copenhagen and the possibility of a $50 million forestry deal is on the horizon.
Two Iwi Leadership Group member have their bags packed for the Climate Change Meeting in Copenhagen, although the deal is shrowded in a public controversy as the trip will be on tax payer money. However, Climate Change Minister, Nick Smith is making no apologies, as it is part of the deal struck up with National and the iwi.
The National Government’s negotiations with iwi over forestry policy and the emissions trading scheme is said to involve up to a $50 million deal.
The National Government and iwi have been discussing the iwi’s struggles with the current carbon credit legislations, as iwi believe they have the right to harvest pre-1900 forests and plant elsewhere to avoid penalties under ETS and Kyoto Protocol. However, Nick Smith has said this is prohibited under current agreements.
Therefore, the Government has answered in the form of a treaty settlement, allowing iwi to plant on crown land and keep the carbon credits. This however, will not help any other pre-1900 forests, however Dr Smith is hoping the international climate change rules will be changed.
The Emmission Trading Scheme, Copenhagen and the new forestry policy are all apart of the negotiations between National and iwi, although many of the New Zealand public are not completely sold to the idea.
