New Zealand, Most Peaceful Country!

According to the Global Peace Index, New Zealand has just recently been placed in the top position, in turn being entitled the world’s most peaceful country.
A number of reasons have emerged for New Zealand’s place on Global Peace Index, including such things as the election of a new coalition government with a strong parliamentary majority in November 2008. Other factors named have included NZ’s low defence spending, as well as social aspects such as low homicide rates. Many factors were taken into consideration, including political stability, warfare, human rights, murder rates, military spending, international relations and the risk of terrorism. Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia were placed last on the index, largely due to complete deficits in democracy, poverty as well as social and political instability.
The placing on the index works very well for NZ, as the World March for Peace and Nonviolence is starting in New Zealand on October 2nd. This march is the first ever March to travel all six continents asking for the end of wars, the dismantling of nuclear weapons and for an end to all forms of violence!
This is another example of NZ’s place in the international arena, and as well as NZ, as a small country, learning a lot from more dominant players in the international stage, however, this illustrates a lot can also be gained through following NZ achievements.
