Helen Clark, the NZ Prime Minister from 1999 to 2008, has just been selected by the United Nations to head the UN Development Programme. Clark has always proved a loyal and devoted member to the UN through her role as Prime Minister, and now her position is to assist developing countries with training, advice and support.
It has been said by many political observers that the selection process has been very intense, with a number of key player vying for the position.
For NZ, it is the highest position a New Zealander has held in some time, since the high position held in the WTO. Her position is that of the third highest in the United Nations.
Helen Clark received support from all the of the NZ current political party's including that of her current party's opposition, the National Party.
It now means that a bi-election will occur for her Mt Albert seat in Auckland, and the back bencher will leave the NZ parliament for the first time since she became a member in 1981.
This is definitely a proud day for NZ.
